Zhang Liao, a prominent figure in Chinese history, is often depicted in movies and television adaptations of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. A general of the late Eastern Han dynasty and Cao Wei state during the Three Kingdoms period, his life is filled with tales of bravery and strategic brilliance.
Initially serving under Lü Bu, Zhang Liao demonstrated unwavering loyalty. Following Lü Bu's defeat at the Battle of Xiapi, Zhang Liao impressed Cao Cao with his courage and was recruited into his service. He subsequently participated in numerous campaigns, solidifying his reputation as a formidable warrior.
Zhang Liao is most famously known for his defense of Hefei in 215 CE. With only a small contingent of troops, he successfully repelled a much larger army led by Sun Quan, the founder of the Eastern Wu state. His daring raid on Sun Quan's camp earned him immense respect and instilled fear in his enemies.
