Snake Plissken, often referred to simply as Snake, is a fictional anti-hero created by writer-director John Carpenter and actor Kurt Russell. He debuted in the 1981 film Escape from New York and reprised the role in the 1996 sequel, Escape from L.A.
Plissken is a former Special Forces soldier turned criminal with a distinctive eye patch covering his left eye. In Escape from New York, set in a dystopian future, he's offered a pardon for his crimes if he rescues the President of the United States, whose plane crashed inside the maximum-security prison that Manhattan Island has become.
Known for his cynical wit, survival skills, and proficiency in combat, Snake reluctantly undertakes dangerous missions, often forced into them by the authorities. He is portrayed as fiercely independent and distrustful of government.
Kurt Russell's portrayal of Snake Plissken has become a cult icon, influencing numerous characters in subsequent action and science fiction films. While primarily a film character, Snake's popularity has also extended to comic books and other media.
