Barbara Gordon is a prominent character in DC Comics, most famously known as Batgirl. She debuted in 1967 as the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon.
Unlike previous female associates of Batman, Barbara was not merely a sidekick or love interest. She was a highly intelligent and capable individual, earning a doctorate in library science and excelling in martial arts and detective work.
