Pennywise the Dancing Clown is the primary antagonist of Stephen King's 1986 horror novel, It, and its subsequent adaptations. He is an ancient, shapeshifting entity from beyond the known universe, pre-dating the formation of Earth.
Pennywise primarily takes the form of a clown to lure children, his preferred prey. This form is often referred to as "It". However, he can manifest as any creature or fear his victims harbor. His true form is described as horrifying and incomprehensible to the human mind.
He resides in the sewers beneath the fictional town of Derry, Maine, awakening every 27 years to feed on the town's inhabitants, particularly children. He induces fear in his victims, making them easier to manipulate and consume. The fear itself is also a form of sustenance for him.
