R2-D2, often pronounced "Artoo-Detoo," is an astromech droid from the Star Wars universe. Manufactured by Industrial Automaton, he's known for his distinctive cylindrical body, dome-shaped head, and binary language of beeps and whistles, which is understood by some characters, most notably C-3PO.

Throughout the saga, R2-D2 plays a pivotal role. He initially served on Queen Amidala's royal starship, where he demonstrated remarkable bravery and resourcefulness. This led to him carrying the stolen plans of the Death Star, a crucial element in the Rebel Alliance's fight against the Galactic Empire.

R2-D2's loyalty lies primarily with his friends, especially Anakin Skywalker (later Darth Vader) and Luke Skywalker. He frequently assists them in piloting starfighters and repairing equipment. His memory is generally not wiped, making him a repository of significant events throughout the Skywalker saga. He is a constant companion to C-3PO and together they are the most frequently appearing characters in all the films.
