Gothmog
Brand:
Small Green Pea
Theme:
The Lord of the Rings
Biography:
Gothmog, in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, is a lieutenant of Morgul, serving Sauron during the War of the Ring. He is most prominently featured in Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Return of the King.
While his origins are not explicitly detailed in Tolkien's writings, Gothmog commands the forces of Minas Morgul at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. In the film, he rides a warg and leads the orcish armies against the defenders of Gondor and their allies.
In the film, Gothmog is depicted with a disfigured face, possibly indicating previous battle wounds or a deformity characteristic of orcish leaders. He is portrayed as a cruel and brutal commander, overseeing the siege of Minas Tirith and directing the initial attacks. He is ultimately responsible for coordinating the efforts to break the city's defenses.
Although his role in the books is smaller, the film adaptation amplifies Gothmog's presence to personify the ruthlessness and overwhelming power of Sauron's forces, making him a memorable, albeit monstrous, figure in the narrative.
