Jack Torrance is a fictional character, most famously portrayed by Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film adaptation of Stephen King's novel, *The Shining*.

Torrance is a struggling writer and recovering alcoholic who accepts a position as the winter caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. Hoping to overcome his writer's block and rebuild his fractured family relationships, he brings his wife, Wendy, and son, Danny, with him.

As the winter progresses, the isolation, combined with the hotel's dark history and supernatural forces, takes a toll on Jack's sanity. He becomes increasingly erratic, hostile, and withdrawn, ultimately succumbing to the hotel's malevolent influence.

Driven to madness, Jack transforms into a violent and dangerous figure, terrorizing his family and ultimately attempting to murder them. He becomes a vessel for the Overlook's evil, a tragic figure consumed by inner demons and external supernatural pressures. Jack is ultimately defeated when he is trapped in the hotel maze and freezes to death.
