Stanley Ipkiss, a mild-mannered bank clerk in Edge City, is the primary character to discover and wear the magical mask in the film The Mask. In the comic book series upon which the film is based, the Mask is a much more sinister artifact. However, the movie and subsequent animated series soften the Mask's influence.
When Ipkiss dons the Mask, he transforms into a mischievous, zoot-suited trickster with a green head and seemingly limitless cartoon-like powers. His inhibitions disappear, replaced by outlandish confidence and an unrestrained id. "The Mask" can alter reality, pull weapons from thin air, and warp his own body.
While Stanley Ipkiss is the most recognizable wearer of the Mask, other characters throughout the franchise also experience its transformative effects, each influenced by their own personality and desires. This makes the Mask itself almost a character, reflecting the wearer's innermost self in a wildly exaggerated and often chaotic manner.
