Biography:
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (1971-1995) was a celebrated American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, businesswoman, and fashion designer. Referred to as the "Queen of Tejano Music," she made significant contributions to the genre's popularity.
Born in Lake Jackson, Texas, Selena debuted on the music scene as a child, fronting the band Selena y Los Dinos, which included her siblings. Early challenges involved navigating the male-dominated Tejano music industry and learning to sing in Spanish, a language she initially struggled with.
Selena achieved mainstream success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, winning a Grammy Award for Best Mexican/American Album in 1994 for "Selena Live!" She topped the Billboard Latin charts with numerous hits and became a major cultural icon for the Latinx community.
Tragically, Selena's burgeoning career was cut short when she was murdered at the age of 23 by the president of her fan club. Her legacy continues through her music, fashion, and cultural impact, solidifying her status as one of the most influential Latin artists of all time.
