Galen Erso was a brilliant scientist specializing in kyber crystals and energy production. He initially believed his research was purely for peaceful applications, contributing to advancements in energy solutions for impoverished planets.
However, his expertise was exploited by the Separatists during the Clone Wars, forcing him to develop weapon systems. Following the rise of the Galactic Empire, Orson Krennic, an ambitious Imperial officer and former colleague, coerced Erso into working on the Death Star project.
Though presented as a means to provide limitless energy, Erso secretly sabotaged the Death Star's design, creating a critical flaw intended for the Rebellion to exploit. This act of conscience ultimately led to his death during a Rebel Alliance attack on the Imperial research facility on Eadu. His daughter, Jyn Erso, became instrumental in retrieving the Death Star plans and exposing the weakness, making Galen's sacrifice a pivotal point in the Rebel victory.
