Biography:
Balin was a Dwarf of the Longbeard clan, son of Fundin and elder brother of Dwalin. Born in Erebor, he lived through its prosperity under King Thror and its subsequent sack by the dragon Smaug.
He was one of the thirteen dwarves who accompanied Thorin Oakenshield on the Quest of Erebor, as recounted in The Hobbit. He served as a scout and often acted as a spokesperson for the company, due to his relatively polite and less gruff demeanor. Balin displayed wisdom and bravery, notably alerting the group to danger and demonstrating concern for Bilbo Baggins.
After the success of the Quest and the re-establishment of the Dwarf kingdom under Dain Ironfoot, Balin remained in Erebor for several years. He later led a group of dwarves on an expedition to reclaim Khazad-dûm (Moria) in T.A. 2989. Initially successful, Balin declared himself Lord of Moria. However, the colony was quickly overrun by orcs, and Balin was slain by an orc archer in T.A. 2994, ending his reign and the ill-fated attempt to retake the ancient Dwarf realm. His tomb is later discovered by the Fellowship of the Ring.
