Biography:
Théoden is the seventeenth King of Rohan in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. He is the son of Thengel and Morwen Steelsheen, and brother to Théodwyn, mother of Éomer and Éowyn.
Early in his reign, Théoden enjoyed a prosperous rule. However, he fell under the insidious influence of Gríma Wormtongue, a servant of Saruman, who gradually weakened him both physically and mentally. Wormtongue poisoned Théoden's mind, isolating him and allowing Saruman to gain control of Rohan.
Gandalf the White, along with Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, arrived in Edoras and healed Théoden from Wormtongue's spell. Théoden regained his strength and leadership, leading his people in the Battle of Helm's Deep and later riding to the aid of Gondor at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
He died in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, slain by the Witch-king of Angmar, fulfilling a prophecy that no man could kill him. He was avenged by Éowyn and Meriadoc Brandybuck. Théoden is remembered as a valiant warrior and a wise king who ultimately freed his kingdom from darkness.
