Biography:
Bifur is a Dwarf companion of Thorin Oakenshield on the Quest of Erebor in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. He is a distant kinsman of Thorin's line, but not directly of Durin's folk.
Distinguished by his perpetually bewildered and agitated state, Bifur is one of the two Dwarves (along with his cousin Bofur) noted for carrying axes, rather than finer weaponry. He is also accompanied by his brother Bombur.
Crucially, Bifur is affected by an old axe-head that previously struck him in the mines of Moria. This injury leaves him somewhat addled and prone to outbursts in Khuzdul, the Dwarvish language, even when the others are speaking Westron (Common Speech).
Despite his condition, Bifur remains a loyal member of the company. He participates in the Battle of Five Armies, defending Erebor alongside his companions. He survives the battle and eventually shares in the treasure recovered from the dragon Smaug.
