The Kingsguard is an elite group of seven knights sworn to protect the King of the Seven Kingdoms. Membership is a lifetime commitment, requiring vows of celibacy, obedience, and selfless service. A Kingsguard knight forgoes lands, titles, and family ties upon joining the order.
Throughout the series, notable Kingsguard members include Ser Jaime Lannister, known initially as the Kingslayer for killing the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen, a former member.
