Dexter Morgan, a fictional character created by Jeff Lindsay, is the protagonist of the "Dexter" book series and the Showtime television adaptation.

Born into a traumatic childhood, witnessing his mother's brutal murder, Dexter was adopted by Miami police officer Harry Morgan. Recognizing Dexter's homicidal tendencies, Harry channeled them, devising a "code" - Dexter could only kill murderers who had escaped justice.

By day, Dexter works as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, providing him access and knowledge crucial to his double life. He meticulously plans and executes his kills, adhering strictly to Harry's Code to avoid detection.

Despite his carefully constructed facade, Dexter grapples with his lack of genuine human emotion and relationships. He attempts to simulate normalcy through a relationship with Rita Bennett and her children, while constantly struggling to reconcile his dark passenger with his desire for connection.

Over the course of the series, Dexter faces numerous challenges, including close calls with law enforcement, evolving relationships, and questioning the validity of Harry's Code.
