Donkey Kong, often abbreviated as DK, is a prominent character in the Mario video game franchise. He first appeared in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong as the antagonist, where he kidnapped Pauline and was thwarted by Jumpman (later known as Mario).

Originally conceived as a gorilla-like creature, Donkey Kong's appearance has evolved over time. The original Donkey Kong is now referred to as Cranky Kong, and the character who subsequently became known as Donkey Kong is Cranky Kong's grandson (or son, depending on the source) and is often depicted wearing a red tie with the initials "DK".

While initially portrayed as a villain, Donkey Kong eventually transitioned into a protagonist. He stars in his own series of games, most notably the Donkey Kong Country series, developed by Rare, where he and his friends protect their island home from various threats, including King K. Rool and the Kremlings. He is known for his strength, love of bananas, and association with the jungle setting.
