Eventually, Harry tricks Lucius Malfoy into freeing Dobby by giving him a sock. As a free elf, Dobby is overjoyed and fiercely loyal to Harry, considering him a true friend. He works for a time in the Hogwarts kitchens and is paid for his services, which is unusual for house-elves.

Dobby plays a crucial role in later books, often assisting Harry and his friends in dangerous situations. His loyalty and bravery are unwavering, and he ultimately sacrifices his life to save Harry, Ron, Hermione, and others from Death Eaters. Dobby's final act solidified his place as a beloved and tragic figure in the Harry Potter series.
