Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, more commonly known as Nearly Headless Nick, is the Gryffindor house ghost at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Born in the late 15th century, Sir Nicholas was a wizard of some standing, possibly from a wealthy family, based on his title. While alive, he was known for his fashion sense, particularly his lace ruffs and feathered hat.
He met his untimely end after attempting to fix the buck teeth of Lady Grieve. The spell backfired, resulting in Lady Grieve sprouting tusks. As punishment, he was to be executed by beheading. However, the executioner's blunt axe failed to completely sever his head, leaving it hanging by a mere thread of skin.
Thus, he became a ghost, forever "nearly headless." He desperately sought membership in the Headless Hunt, but was repeatedly rejected due to his incomplete beheading. Despite his tragic past and aspirations, Nick remains a friendly and helpful presence in Gryffindor Tower, offering advice and comfort to students, particularly Harry Potter and his friends.
