Nicholas Joseph Fury is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a master spy, former leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division), and a key figure in the Marvel Universe.
Fury originated as a World War II veteran, known for his cigar-chomping toughness and leadership of the Howling Commandos. This original version primarily battled Nazi forces and other Axis powers.
Later retconning revealed Fury's prolonged lifespan was due to the "Infinity Formula", slowing his aging process dramatically. This allowed him to transition into the modern era, where he became the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., responsible for coordinating global security and protecting Earth from various threats, including supervillains and extraterrestrial invasions.
In the Ultimate Marvel universe, Fury was reimagined as an African-American character, a design which later influenced the Samuel L. Jackson portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
