Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is the main protagonist in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. He's a supernatural being born from a stone imbued with cosmic energy. Possessing immense strength, agility, and magical powers, he quickly rose to prominence amongst the monkeys on Flower Fruit Mountain, declaring himself their king.
Driven by a desire for immortality, Sun Wukong sought knowledge and power. He mastered seventy-two transformations, cloud-somersaulting abilities, and acquired a magical staff called the Ruyi Jingu Bang. He became a powerful, and initially rebellious, figure.
His hubris led him to challenge the Jade Emperor, the ruler of Heaven, resulting in a devastating conflict. Ultimately, Buddha subdued Sun Wukong, imprisoning him under a mountain for five hundred years.
Sun Wukong's redemption came when he was freed by the monk Tang Sanzang to serve as his disciple and protector on a pilgrimage to retrieve Buddhist scriptures from the West. Throughout the journey, he battled demons and monsters, utilizing his skills to ensure Tang Sanzang's safety. He learns humility and discipline.
Upon completion of the pilgrimage, Sun Wukong achieved enlightenment and was granted Buddhahood, becoming known as the Victorious Fighting Buddha.
