Captain Nathaniel Adam was a U.S. Air Force pilot caught in an experimental alien metal explosion during a test. The blast fused the metal to his body, atomizing him and then reforming him as a being of pure energy contained within the metal shell. This new form granted him superpowers.

Now known as Captain Atom, he possesses superhuman strength, speed, flight, and the ability to manipulate energy, particularly nuclear energy. He can fire powerful energy blasts and absorb radiation. He often struggles to control his powers and prevent potential catastrophic releases of energy.

Haunted by his past and the circumstances of his transformation, Captain Atom has served as both a hero and a government operative, often finding himself conflicted between his duty and his conscience. He has been a member of the Justice League and other superhero teams, consistently striving to use his immense power responsibly while grappling with the constant threat of losing control.
