Swamp Thing, a prominent figure in the DC Universe, is a sentient humanoid plant creature. He debuted in House of Secrets #92 (June-July 1971).
Originally, Swamp Thing was scientist Alec Holland. Holland was working on a bio-restorative formula in the swamps of Louisiana when he and his wife were attacked. He was seemingly killed in an explosion, but the effects of the formula merged his consciousness with the surrounding plant life.
Swamp Thing is capable of controlling plant life, regenerating, and even teleporting via plant matter. He is a powerful protector of the Green, the elemental force connecting all plant life. He has been depicted as a tragic figure, struggling with his humanity and his role as a guardian of the natural world.
