Biography:
Lester Hayes, a former cornerback, is the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders player most notably associated with the practice of heavily applying Stickum, an adhesive substance, to his uniform and body to gain an advantage in intercepting passes. Hayes played for the Raiders from 1977 to 1986.
Nicknamed "The Judge," Hayes was known for his exceptional coverage skills and physical style of play. He was a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro selection. He contributed significantly to the Raiders' Super Bowl victories in 1980 (Super Bowl XV) and 1983 (Super Bowl XVIII).
Hayes's heavy use of Stickum became a league-wide topic of discussion and ultimately contributed to the NFL's ban on the substance, though his success was attributed by many to film study and his technique as much as Stickum.
