The Construction Worker in Michel Faber's novel, The Book of Strange New Things (often referred to as "Other" based on its extraterrestrial setting), is a nameless character encountered by Peter Leigh on the planet Oasis.
He belongs to the indigenous Oasan population. Like the other Oasans, he is a sentient being with distinct physical characteristics, notably soft skin, large eyes, and a generally androgynous appearance.
The Construction Worker, along with his fellow Oasans, is involved in building housing for the human settlers of Oasis. He communicates with Peter and the other missionaries through a rudimentary pidgin English, often misunderstanding complex concepts.
He, along with the others, views Peter and his teachings with a sense of respectful curiosity and dependence for survival, but does not always understand Peter's religion.
