Jor-El was a brilliant Kryptonian scientist living in the city of Kandor. He served on Krypton's Science Council, often clashing with its members due to his increasingly dire warnings about the planet's impending doom. Jor-El discovered that Krypton's core was unstable, a consequence of excessive energy mining, and that the planet was destined to explode.

Frustrated by the Science Council's denial and inaction, Jor-El dedicated himself to finding a way to save his people. He designed the Phantom Zone projector as a means of punishment but ultimately realized it could also be used to evacuate Kryptonians. When this idea was rejected, he focused on saving his infant son, Kal-El.

Using Kryptonian technology, Jor-El constructed a rocket ship designed to carry Kal-El to Earth, a planet with a yellow sun that would grant him incredible powers. He imbued the ship with Kryptonian historical and scientific data to guide his son's upbringing. Moments before Krypton's destruction, Jor-El launched the ship, sacrificing himself and his wife, Lara Lor-Van, to ensure the survival of the last son of Krypton.
