Huang Zhong was a renowned general who lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, featured prominently in the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Initially serving under Liu Biao, the governor of Jing Province, Huang Zhong was stationed in Changsha under Han Xuan. Despite his advanced age, Huang Zhong displayed exceptional archery skills and martial prowess, particularly during a battle against Guan Yu. Han Xuan, fearing Huang Zhong's abilities, became suspicious of him.
After being convinced of Liu Bei's virtuous rule, Huang Zhong, along with Wei Yan, defected from Han Xuan and joined Liu Bei's forces. He played a crucial role in Liu Bei's conquest of Yi Province, contributing significantly to the capture of numerous strategic locations and displaying courage in combat.
Huang Zhong was named one of the "Five Tiger Generals" of Shu Han, alongside Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, and Ma Chao, recognizing his contributions and valor. He died of illness not long after the Battle of Mount Dingjun at an advanced age, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and skill.
