The Greek Hoplite wasn't a single individual, but rather a citizen-soldier who formed the backbone of ancient Greek armies from roughly the 7th to 4th centuries BC. These were primarily free citizens – farmers, artisans, and merchants – who could afford their own bronze armor, shield (hoplon), spear (dory), and sword (xiphos).

Hoplites were defined by their participation in the phalanx formation, a tightly packed, shield-to-shield line of men that emphasized collective strength and discipline. Their training focused on maintaining this formation and executing coordinated movements.

Motivated by civic duty and the defense of their polis (city-state), hoplites were crucial in repelling invasions and engaging in inter-city conflicts. Famous battles involving hoplites include Marathon, Thermopylae, and Plataea. While not professional soldiers in the modern sense, their effectiveness stemmed from their shared purpose and rigorous training within their citizen-army structure. The hoplite's societal impact went beyond the battlefield, influencing Greek political and social values.
