Norm Spellman is a fictional character in the film Avatar (2009). He is a xenoanthropologist and a member of the Avatar Program on Pandora.
Prior to arriving on Pandora, Norm meticulously studied the Na'vi language and culture. His linguistic proficiency allowed him to quickly become fluent in Na'vi, and he possesses a deep understanding of their customs and social structures.
As part of the Avatar Program, Norm uses a genetically engineered Na'vi body, an "avatar," to interact with the native population and conduct his research. He genuinely admires the Na'vi and their way of life, contrasting with the more mercenary motives of other RDA personnel.
