Edson Arantes do Nascimento, universally known as Pelé, (1940-2022) was a Brazilian professional footballer widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He was nicknamed "O Rei" (The King).
Pelé rose to international fame at the age of 17, leading Brazil to victory in the 1958 FIFA World Cup. He went on to win two more World Cups in 1962 and 1970, making him the only player in history to have achieved this feat.
He spent the majority of his club career playing for Santos FC, where he scored a remarkable 643 goals in 659 appearances. He also played for the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League (NASL) before retiring in 1977.
