Gao Lan was a minor general serving under Yuan Shao during the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the early part of the Three Kingdoms period in the historical novel *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*. While not a central figure, he is remembered primarily for his brief but impactful role in the Battle of Guandu.

He distinguished himself during the battle by displaying considerable martial prowess. Gao Lan bravely engaged Zhao Yun, a renowned warrior serving Cao Cao. Although the details of their combat are somewhat obscured in the narrative, it's generally understood that Zhao Yun ultimately prevailed. However, Gao Lan's resistance highlighted his skill as a warrior and the strength of Yuan Shao's forces.

Gao Lan's defection or death varies depending on the interpretation of the novel and historical records. Some accounts suggest he surrendered to Cao Cao after the battle. Other versions indicate he was slain. Regardless of his ultimate fate, Gao Lan remains a notable, if lesser-known, character within the complex tapestry of *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*.
