Biography:
The Jade Lion that Shines in the Night, also known simply as the Jade Lion, is a legendary steed featured in Luo Guanzhong's historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Though not a character in the traditional sense, the horse plays a significant role as a symbol of status, strength, and ultimately, misfortune.
Originally owned by Dong Zhuo, the Jade Lion was renowned for its speed, endurance, and magnificent appearance. It was a prized possession, representing Dong Zhuo's power and ambition.
Later, Li Su gifted the Jade Lion to Lü Bu in an attempt to persuade the mighty warrior to betray his adoptive father, Ding Yuan, and join Dong Zhuo's forces. The bribe proved successful, leading to Ding Yuan's assassination and Lü Bu's shift in allegiance. This act solidified the Jade Lion's association with treachery and betrayal.
The Jade Lion remained Lü Bu's favored mount throughout his career, accompanying him in numerous battles. However, it did not bring him lasting success. Lü Bu, despite his martial prowess, was ultimately defeated and executed. The Jade Lion, a symbol of his ambition and ill-gotten gains, vanishes from the narrative after Lü Bu's demise, its fate uncertain, but its legacy forever linked to betrayal and fleeting glory.
