Miguel Rivera is the protagonist of Disney Pixar's 2017 animated film, Coco. He is a twelve-year-old aspiring musician living in Santa Cecilia, Mexico.
Miguel comes from a family of shoemakers, the Rivera family, who have a strict ban on music due to a family tragedy involving Miguel's great-great-grandfather abandoning his wife and daughter, Imelda, to pursue a musical career.
Despite his family's prohibition, Miguel secretly idolizes the late musician Ernesto de la Cruz and dreams of becoming a musician like him. He teaches himself to play guitar and hopes to perform in the town's talent show.
On Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), Miguel, desperate to play music, attempts to borrow Ernesto de la Cruz's guitar from his mausoleum. Upon strumming the guitar, he is transported to the Land of the Dead.
In the Land of the Dead, Miguel must seek the blessing of a deceased family member to return to the Land of the Living before sunrise. His journey leads him to uncover hidden family secrets and ultimately reconcile his passion for music with his love for his family.
