El Diablo is a mantle assumed by several different characters in DC Comics, each possessing fiery abilities.
The original El Diablo, Lazarus Lane, debuted in 1970. He was a bank teller transformed into a vigilante after being struck by lightning and revived by a dying Native American shaman. He gained control over a fire demon.
Rafael Sandoval, introduced in 1989, served as the second El Diablo. A city councilman in Dos Rios, Texas, Sandoval gained his powers after encountering Lazarus Lane, who passed on the curse to him. He used his abilities, which included pyrokinesis, to fight corruption and crime.
Chato Santana, the most recent and arguably most well-known El Diablo, was created in 2008. A former gang member, Santana possesses the power to generate and control fire, manifested as a skeletal figure. He often struggles with controlling his abilities and the destruction they cause. He was a member of the Suicide Squad in both the comics and the 2016 film, in which he sacrificed himself to defeat Incubus.
