Biography:
Maximus Decimus Meridius is a fictional character, primarily known as the protagonist of the 2000 film Gladiator, played by Russell Crowe.
In the film, Maximus is a highly respected and skilled Roman general who serves Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Aurelius intends to restore the Roman Republic and asks Maximus to serve as its protector. However, Aurelius's ambitious son, Commodus, murders his father and seizes power.
Maximus refuses to pledge allegiance to Commodus and is marked for execution. He escapes, but is captured by slave traders and forced to become a gladiator. He rises through the ranks due to his combat prowess and leadership.
Ultimately, Maximus returns to Rome as a gladiator and uses his popularity with the crowds to challenge Commodus's tyrannical rule.
