Biography:
Maleficent is a fictional character created by Walt Disney Productions. She debuted as the main antagonist in the 1959 animated film, Sleeping Beauty.
Inspired by the villainous fairy in Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale "La Belle au bois dormant," Maleficent is a powerful and malevolent fairy who curses Princess Aurora at her christening. Driven by resentment at not being invited to the celebration, she declares Aurora will prick her finger on a spinning wheel's spindle and die before sunset on her sixteenth birthday.
Visually striking, Maleficent is depicted with black horns, green skin, and a dramatic, black and purple gown. Her signature staff is topped with a glowing orb. She is often accompanied by her raven, Diablo.
In later adaptations, notably the 2014 film Maleficent and its sequel, her backstory is explored, offering a more nuanced and sympathetic perspective on her motivations and actions, even re-imagining her curse as a result of a broken heart and betrayal.
