Gollum, originally known as Sméagol, was a Stoor Hobbit who lived near the Gladden Fields. His life irrevocably changed when he murdered his cousin, Déagol, to obtain the One Ring.

The Ring's corrupting influence twisted Sméagol both physically and mentally. He was banished by his family and retreated into the Misty Mountains, where he lived in caves for almost five centuries. This isolation and the Ring's power transformed him into the wretched creature known as Gollum.

Gollum's defining characteristic was his obsession with the Ring, which he referred to as "my precious." He stalked Bilbo Baggins after Bilbo found the Ring, desperate to reclaim it. This pursuit led him on a winding path that ultimately intertwined with the quest to destroy the Ring.

Throughout his journey, Gollum displayed a dual personality, often arguing with himself: Sméagol, representing a flicker of his former self, and Gollum, the creature dominated by the Ring. His knowledge of Mordor and its surrounding lands proved vital to Frodo and Sam's quest, though his treacherous nature constantly threatened their success.
