Biography:
Qin Shi Huang, born Ying Zheng (嬴政), was the founder of the Qin dynasty and the first emperor of a unified China (221–210 BCE). He was born in 259 BCE and ascended the throne of the Qin state at age 13. Initially, he ruled under a regent.
He achieved the unification of China through military conquest, ending the Warring States period. He then implemented sweeping legalist reforms, standardizing weights, measures, currency, and writing. His policies centralized power and aimed to establish a lasting empire.
Qin Shi Huang initiated massive public works projects, including the construction of a network of roads and canals, and the early iterations of the Great Wall to protect against nomadic invaders. He is also famous for the Terracotta Army, intended to accompany him in his afterlife.
Despite his achievements, Qin Shi Huang's reign was characterized by harsh rule and suppression of dissent. He died in 210 BCE, while on a tour of eastern China, and was succeeded by his less capable son, leading to the rapid collapse of the Qin dynasty shortly after his death.
