Peter Parker, better known as Spider-Man, is a fictional superhero appearing in Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, he first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962).
Orphaned at a young age, Peter was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in Queens, New York. A shy and intellectually gifted high school student, Peter gains spider-like abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider during a science exhibit.
Initially seeking to use his powers for personal gain, Peter's life is irrevocably changed when his Uncle Ben is murdered by a thief he could have stopped. Haunted by guilt, Peter embraces the mantra "With great power comes great responsibility," dedicating his life to fighting crime as Spider-Man.
Spider-Man's powers include superhuman strength, agility, and the ability to cling to most surfaces. He also possesses a "spider-sense," which warns him of impending danger. He uses these abilities, along with his scientific acumen, to create web-shooters that allow him to swing between buildings and subdue criminals. He balances his heroic activities with his civilian life, facing everyday struggles as a student, photographer, and friend.
