Biography:
Sabra, whose real name is Ruth Bat-Seraph, is a Marvel Comics superheroine originating from Israel. She first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #256 in 1981, created by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema.
Ruth is a mutant with superhuman strength, speed, agility, stamina, and reflexes. She also possesses the power of energy projection and the ability to leave a trail of energy as she flies. These powers stem from a combination of mutant abilities and specialized training from a young age.
Trained from childhood by the Israeli government, Sabra serves as a special agent and symbol of national pride. Her character has been frequently criticized and caused controversy for portraying nationalistic Israeli ideals, sometimes at the expense of nuance and portraying Palestinian characters. Her name, Sabra, is itself a term for Jews born in Israel, alluding to her integral role in Israeli identity.
Sabra’s appearances in Marvel comics have been sporadic, but she frequently teams up with or opposes other heroes, often in stories that address issues surrounding Israeli-Palestinian relations. She is usually portrayed as well intentioned but naive, with her strong nationalistic beliefs often clashing with the broader perspectives of other heroes.
