Biography:
The Lancers of the Guard (Polish Squadron) were a cavalry unit within the French Imperial Guard during the Napoleonic Wars. They were formed in 1807 from Polish volunteers, initially numbering around 125 men.
Initially commanded by Colonel Wincenty Krasiński, the unit quickly gained a reputation for bravery and effectiveness, participating in numerous key battles. They served with distinction in Spain, Russia, and during the Hundred Days campaign.
Known for their distinctive blue uniforms with crimson facings, and tall czapka hats, the Lancers were elite troops, fiercely loyal to Napoleon. Their lances proved devastating in charge, making them a feared force on the battlefield.
The squadron was essentially destroyed in the Retreat from Moscow in 1812 but later was reconstructed. They remained loyal and were disbanded after Napoleon's final defeat in 1815. Their legacy lives on as a symbol of Polish courage and military prowess within the Napoleonic era.
