Hobgoblin is a supervillain appearing in Marvel Comics, primarily associated with Spider-Man. The original Hobgoblin's identity was Roderick Kingsley, a wealthy fashion designer who sought to gain power and wealth through criminal means. He stumbled upon one of Green Goblin's hidden lairs, discovering Norman Osborn's notes and equipment. Kingsley modified the Goblin formula, making himself stronger, faster, and more cunning.
Instead of immediately revealing himself, Kingsley brainwashed petty criminal Lefty Donovan into becoming a test subject and initial Hobgoblin. When Donovan failed, Kingsley took on the mantle himself. He operated as a criminal mastermind, using psychological warfare and advanced weaponry to challenge Spider-Man and other criminal elements.
Over the years, the Hobgoblin identity has been assumed by several others, including Ned Leeds (a journalist brainwashed by Kingsley), Jason Macendale (who later became Jack O'Lantern and then Demogoblin), and Phil Urich. Roderick Kingsley has returned numerous times, often hiring others to act as Hobgoblin while he operates from the shadows, further complicating the character's legacy and history.
