Master Kau, also known as Gau or Kao, is a recurring character in Hong Kong action cinema, most notably within the subgenre of hopping vampire (jiangshi) films.
He is typically portrayed as a Taoist priest and skilled martial artist. Master Kau uses his Taoist knowledge and physical prowess to combat supernatural threats, primarily the hopping vampires which plague the countryside.
He often employs a variety of tools and techniques, including talismans, peach wood swords, and specialized breathing exercises, to subdue the undead.
Though stern, Master Kau is usually presented as a wise and benevolent figure dedicated to protecting the innocent from the supernatural. Often appearing with inept, comedic apprentices that contrast with his seriousness, he is seen instructing them in both martial arts and the methods of exorcism.
