Mark Watney, portrayed by Matt Damon in the 2015 film The Martian, is a NASA astronaut and botanist on the Ares III mission to Mars. His primary role on the mission is as a mechanical engineer and botanist, responsible for maintaining the habitat and experimenting with growing food.

During an unexpected and violent Martian dust storm, Watney is presumed dead after a communications malfunction during the crew's emergency evacuation. Severely injured and separated from his crewmates, he is left behind on the planet.

Watney awakens to find himself the sole human inhabitant of Mars, with limited resources and no immediate means of communication. Resourceful and scientifically minded, he utilizes his botany skills to cultivate potatoes in Martian soil, creating a sustainable food source to survive.

Throughout his ordeal, Watney displays incredible resilience, humor, and scientific acumen, continuously adapting and problem-solving to extend his survival while tirelessly attempting to re-establish communication with Earth. His plight becomes a global phenomenon, uniting the world in an effort to bring him home.
