Biography:
Frida Kahlo was a celebrated Mexican painter, born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón in Coyoacán, Mexico in 1907. She is renowned for her intensely personal and often unsettling self-portraits, which explore themes of identity, the human body, and postcolonialism in Mexican society.
Kahlo endured considerable physical suffering throughout her life, beginning with a bout of polio as a child and exacerbated by a severe bus accident at age 18. This accident left her with lifelong pain and numerous medical problems, which she openly depicted in her artwork. Her injuries profoundly shaped her artistic vision.
She married fellow Mexican artist Diego Rivera in 1929, a relationship characterized by both deep affection and tumultuous infidelity. Kahlo's art gained increasing recognition internationally during her lifetime, though she remained somewhat overshadowed by Rivera's fame. Today, she is revered as a major figure in 20th-century art and a feminist icon. Kahlo died in 1954 at the age of 47.
