Popeye is a fictional cartoon character created by Elzie Crisler Segar in 1929 for his comic strip Thimble Theatre, later renamed Popeye. He is recognizable for his muscular forearms, prominent chin, squinting eye, and corncob pipe. He is depicted as an independent and tenacious sailor.

Popeye's popularity quickly grew, leading to his own animated shorts produced by Fleischer Studios and later by Famous Studios for Paramount Pictures, beginning in 1933. These cartoons solidified his iconic status, featuring his girlfriend Olive Oyl, his rival Bluto (also known as Brutus), and his adopted son Swee'Pea.

A key element of Popeye's character is his superhuman strength, which he gains by consuming spinach. He usually resorts to spinach eating when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, thus gaining the powers to defeat his enemies. Popeye is a character with a strong moral compass, always standing up for the weak and fighting for what he believes is right.

Beyond the original animated shorts, Popeye has appeared in numerous television shows, video games, and a live-action film starring Robin Williams in 1980. His enduring appeal comes from his humor, his themes of perseverance, and his message that even the underdog can triumph with a little help from spinach.
