Black Lightning, also known as Jefferson Pierce, is a DC Comics superhero. He is notable as one of DC's first major African-American superheroes, debuting in 1977.

Prior to becoming a superhero, Pierce was an Olympic-level decathlete. He later returned to his childhood neighborhood of Suicide Slum in Metropolis to work as a high school teacher and principal. Witnessing the escalating gang violence and the corruption plaguing the community motivated him to take a stand.

Pierce possesses the metahuman ability to generate and manipulate electricity. He uses this power to combat crime and protect the innocent. Black Lightning typically operates in the city of Freeland, a fictional city often depicted as a predominantly African-American community facing socioeconomic challenges.

He has been a member of several superhero teams, including the Justice League and the Outsiders. Beyond his superhero activities, Pierce remains dedicated to education and community development, using his influence to inspire positive change.
