Harley Quinn, originally Dr. Harleen Quinzel, is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. She was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, initially appearing in the animated television series Batman: The Animated Series in September 1992.
Dr. Quinzel was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, where she was assigned to treat the Joker. During her sessions, she became infatuated with him, eventually helping him escape. This transgression led to her own incarceration. She adopted the persona of Harley Quinn, a jester-themed accomplice and lover of the Joker.
While originally portrayed as subservient and devoted to the Joker, Harley Quinn's character has undergone significant development. She is often depicted as an intelligent, albeit chaotic, individual who struggles with her abusive relationship with the Joker. In more recent storylines, she has gained independence, working as an anti-hero and sometimes even siding with Batman and other heroes.
