Norrin Radd was a young astronomer on the planet Zenn-La, a utopian world that had shielded itself from the greater cosmos. When the planet-devourer Galactus threatened Zenn-La, Radd bargained with him.
He offered to become Galactus's herald, searching the universe for uninhabited planets for Galactus to consume, in exchange for the safety of his homeworld.
Galactus accepted and transformed Radd, imbuing him with the Power Cosmic and a silver, cosmic form. He was also granted a surfboard-like craft allowing him to travel at near-light speed.
As the Silver Surfer, he served Galactus for years, but eventually, he was directed to Earth. There, he encountered the Fantastic Four and, witnessing humanity's capacity for both good and evil, turned against Galactus.
This act of defiance trapped him on Earth for a time, severing his connection to the Power Cosmic. He has since regained his freedom and cosmic powers, continuing to grapple with his past and his role in the universe, often acting as a protector of the innocent and a champion of free will.
