Bane is a DC Comics supervillain, most famously known as a formidable adversary of Batman. He was created by Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench, and Graham Nolan, first appearing in Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (1993).

Born and raised within the Peña Duro prison on the fictional Caribbean island of Santa Prisca, Bane endured a brutal existence from childhood, serving the life sentence of his father. He honed his physical and mental abilities to survive the harsh conditions.

Bane was subjected to experiments involving the super-steroid Venom, which exponentially amplified his strength and size. While Venom granted him immense power, it also made him dependent on the substance, requiring regular doses to maintain his enhanced state.

Driven by a desire to conquer Gotham City and prove himself superior, Bane orchestrated a strategic plan to weaken Batman. He famously broke Batman's back in the "Knightfall" storyline, crippling the hero and temporarily claiming Gotham as his own.

Although primarily depicted as a villain, some interpretations have portrayed Bane with a degree of honor and a complex past, suggesting motivations beyond simple malice. He remains a significant and enduring figure in Batman's rogues gallery.
